What were your favorite books of 2011? I haven't read a lot of books that made any lists this year, but I did enjoy Blood, Bones & Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton, Donna Leon's Drawing Conclusions, & Bossypants by Tina Fey.

A Lesson in Secrets by Jacqueline Winspear, the 8th book in the Maisie Dobbs series set in post-World-War-I England. As all the books in the series up to now, this is a wonderful read, deep characters and interesting plot twists. Maisie is successful as a private inquiry agent, and is now financially comfortable due to her inheritance from Maurice. Her love life is in order, although James is away in Canada, and her father is in good health. She is ready to take on a completely new challenge (or two). As suggested in the previous book, Maurice recommended her to assist the government with confidential matters, and they have a task for her: pretend to be a philosophy teacher at a college. I found it a bit farfetched that a college would take her on as a professor without teaching experience, also that she could just quickly read some books and then become an effective teacher. The rest of the story provides new leads for future development: Richard Stratton's new career, and the hope they may meet again; Ursula Thurlow's family move to a nice home, with income from published books, plus the hope of a cure for her disease; Sandra's start on the road to recovery from grief, and a new education; Billy and Doreen with a new child and in a new house; Maisie's father's new romance; and most of all, Maisie and James. I look forward to the next series book, Elegy for Eddie, to be published March 2012.”
