(4 September 1905 – 13 December 1983)
Mary Renault was born Eileen Mary Challans in London, England. She was educated at Oxford & worked as a nurse while beginning her writing career. In 1939 her first novel, Purposes of Love, was published. In 1948, her novel Return to Night won an MGM prize. The prize money allowed Renault & her partner Julie Mullard to emigrate to South Africa, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Mary Renault published her last novel, Funeral Games, in 1981.
Mary Renault is best known for her novels of Ancient Greece, including The King Must Die & The Bull From the Sea, both of which are about the life of Theseus.
